American magazine Wards Auto has released a new version of its annual list of the best engines in the world. In 2018, it included 10 winners, among which there are 4-, 6- and 8-cylinder engines, as well as electric and hybrid drives.
This year, the list is dominated by automakers of the mass market sector and creators of electric cars. The only luxury brands that make it into the top 10 of the very best engines are Jaguar and Infiniti. In addition, there are no German marks on the list.
Wards Auto experts evaluated motors for such parameters as power, torque, comparative characteristics, noise, fuel economy and innovation.
Here are the top 10 best engines of 2018.
10. Chevrolet Bolt
Engine: 150-kilowatt.
The editors of WardsAuto praised the Bolt hatchback drive unit for its large range (322 kilometers), 360 Nm of torque and the ability to accelerate to one hundred kilometers in just 7 seconds. The maximum speed that this electric car can develop reaches 145 kilometers per hour.
9. Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid
Engine: 3.6-liter, Pentastar V6.
This hybrid minivan has a 3.6-liter gasoline engine, paired with an electric motor. 260 horsepower under the hood accelerates the car to the "hundredth" in 7 seconds. Electric traction is used to save fuel, and it turns on even at high speed. And the gas engine turns on when you need to call on a dais or overtake someone.
8. Ford F-150
Engine: 2.7-liter, Twin-Turbo EcoBoost V6.
WardsAuto employees were pleasantly surprised by the quiet operation of the full-size Ford F-150 pickup engine. “We were in luxury cars that are not so quiet,” experts said.
The turbo engine of this machine has a power of 325 hp. and 507 Nm of traction. A pickup truck can carry goods with a maximum weight of 3855 kg.
7. Ford Mustang GT
Engine: 5-liter DOHC V8.
Ford's updated 5-liter V8 has been praised by experts for superior fuel economy and amazing performance. Under the hood, this two-door fastback sports coupe has 435 hp. and 541 Nm of torque. The engine is connected to a six-speed manual gearbox. An automatic transmission is provided as an optional extra.

130 kW electric motor with electric power plant (177 hp).
Combined with excellent driving dynamics and silent engine operation, this hydrogen-powered Japanese sedan is ready to show its best. It is equipped with fuel cells with a capacity of over 100 kW. They are connected in a single unit with an electric motor and power electronics and are located on the hood. According to the manufacturer, at a single refueling with hydrogen, the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell can travel up to 700 km.
5. Honda Civic Type R
Engine: 2.0-liter, turbocharged VTEC 4-cylinder.
306 hp five-door sports hatchback and 399 Nm of torque is equipped with the most powerful Honda engine ever sold in the United States. Honda Civic Type R accelerates to 270 km / h and overcomes the mark of one hundred km / h in 5.7 seconds.
4. Infiniti Q50
Engine: 3.0-liter twin-turbine VR V6.
This beautiful sport-looking sedan can accelerate to 100 km / h in less than five seconds. The power of its biturbo motor is 405 hp. at 6400 rpm. Thanks to innovative technologies such as the new direct fuel injection system and reduced mechanical friction, this model has excellent performance.
The same engine is installed in the Infiniti Q60 coupe. And his predecessor VQ 3.7 won the Wards Auto award 14 times in a row. This is a record among the other participants in the ranking of the best engines for cars.
3. Jaguar XF
Engine: Ingenium 2-liter, four-cylinder and turbocharged.
The editors at Wards Auto were impressed by the new Ingenium engine developed by Jaguar Land Rover. It is completely made of aluminum and has a low fuel consumption and low emissions.

1. Toyota Camry Hybrid
Engine: Atkinson 2.5-liter four-cylinder.
For the Camry sedan, Toyota has created a magnificent symbiosis of a completely new gasoline engine and electric motor. It consumes 0w16 class ultralight oil, which reduces internal friction and loss. Thanks to the regenerative braking system, the excess kinetic energy released by the engine recharges the battery and supports the operation of the electronics. This ensures a high percentage of efficiency.
The Toyota Camry Hybrid, introduced in 2017, has a gasoline engine output of 178 hp. and 221 Nm. The electric motor is slightly weaker - 120 hp and 202 Nm. And the total power of the power plant is 211 hp.
